Our mission is to relieve stress, lift spirits, and heal souls with music

MIDDLESEX HOSPITAL VOCAL CHORDS would never have been “born” if not for a dream of one caring nurse. In February 1990, JOYCE GHENT, a registered nurse at Middlesex Hospital, Middletown, CT, had a dream of helping others through music. One evening, while working in the Intensive Care Unit, she observed a seriously ill patient respond while softly singing to him. She realized, as many people in the medical field have come to know, that music is an instrument of healing. Gathering a few hospital employees who loved to sing, she started a special group. Since our beginning, with those few compassionate singers, Middlesex Hospital Vocal Chords has grown to more than 90 voices strong. Through our music, we seek to help heal those who can be healed and soothe those who cannot. It is a simple gift, but one that has an extraordinary effect on those who are touched by it.

Energy, passion, dedication and a strong will are attributes of Joyce that has kept this sensational group alive for more than thirty years. Fortunately, she chose to use her gifts and talents to make an extraordinarily positive difference in the lives of thousands of people. Her love of life and people are so much in evidence and are highly contagious.

The Vocal Chords perform selections from a wide variety of musical styles including patriotic songs, classical pieces, music from the 1940’s to the present, Broadway medleys, and numerous Christmas and Hanukkah arrangements. There are no auditions necessary to join – – – the only requirement is that the member likes music, enjoys singing, and is willing to make the commitment to attend weekly rehearsals prior to our concerts. We pride ourselves on presenting high quality and enjoyable musical performances.
